This is my personal opinion getting from basic information to protect equipment from lightning surge.

Added test Items for SPD for Power lines

Several test items are added in IEC 61643-11 (2011)to confirm the codition that SPD does not a casue of serious damage.
SPD will have several different types of damage through the test and check whether SPD safly shoutdown circuit.

Thermal stability

Example data of Thermal stability test

Simulation test that varistor gragually degrade and increase leakage current an dfinally internal disconnector safly shoutdown circuit.
Confirm that there is No smoke and No fire until internal disconnector works

Step 1: Adjust voltage so that 2mA flow in tst SPD. Wait until thermaly stabilized.

Step 2: Adjust voltage addional 2mA go through the SPD and wait again for thermally stabilized.

Step 3: Increase additonal 2mA, wait until thermally stabilized. Repeat these steps until internal discoonector works.

Short circuit test

Short circuit current behavior（8.3.5.3）

　This is the test to check both outside/inside disconnector work properly. so that there is no smoke and No fire when SPD becomes short circuit conditoin. Varistor is replaced with copper bar for the test.

Procedure：1）Test at the declarede short-circuit ccurrent rating（ISCCR）：Test with Isscr current of the SPD and confirm internal disconnector properly works.

2）Test at low short circuit current：Connect power supply that has 5 times bigger current can be supply 5 sec and confrim outside disconnector works properly.

Additional test forSPD's failure mode simulation（8.3.5.3.2）

　Preconditioning : Make dammage SPD applying 3 times higher voltage of Max continuous voltage and confirm SPD does not affect circuit.

1）In case of Uc below 440V, apply 1,200V 5 sec, if Uc is higher than 440V, apply 3 times higher the Uc 5 sec. Prepair 3 test samples.

Test : Use 3 power supplies with different current capacity100A, 500A, 1,000A. Apply Uc 5 min.

3）If you are not detect any leakge currnt with the condition using 100A capacilty power suuply, test is end. If you can detect leakge with the condition, check SPD with 500A and 1,000A capacilty power supply.
