This is my personal opinion getting from basic information to protect equipment from lightning surge.

Air termination catches lightning and lightning surge goes to the earth through down conductor.
A glass gets Pouring water and it flows to outside through glass axis. Depending upon amount of pouring water(amount of lightning) and diameter of glass axis(earth resistance), water level in the glass is different.(Earth potential)

Lightning current route is not expected and may cause of fire. External ligthing protection system makes route to go throuhg lightning current.
