This is my personal opinion getting from basic information to protect equipment from lightning surge.

Protectin Area by three methods, Angle Rolling Sphere and mesh

IEC 61024-1 table 1

IEC makes 4 Lightning protection level. Level 1 is most high level and you need to install necesary equipment to protect from big lightning surge. IEC 61024-1, IEC 62305-1,-3,-4 shows you concept of lightning protection. There are 3 methods for lightning protection, called External lightning protection in the IEC, angle and rolling sphere of lightning rod and mesh.

Protection area of LPL(Lightning protection level) 1 is narrow and we need lots of rod to cover the same area of LPL 4. Proteciton area of rolling Sphere method is little bit different from protection area of Angle method.

Mesh method is needed to cover side of lbulidings, if its height is highter than 60m.
