Tips to protect your equipment from Lightning surge.
This is my personal opinion getting from basic information to protect equipment from lightning surge.

Please check laws related lighting rod in your countries. In Japan, we have to install lightning rod for the facilities more than 20m height buildings or keepping explosive or burnend materials exceed regulated amount.
Please follow laws and regurations for installation of lightning rod in your contory. We recommend that you check IEC 61024-1 and IEC 62305-1, if you install it. You can get basic idea about lightning and lightning rod from them.
"External lightning protection system" breaks down to 3 part, air temination, down conductor and earth termination system, earth electrode etc. Air termination part will get lighting and lighting current flow through down conductor and goes to earth termination system . No one can not estimate where lightning current goes whitout lightning rod. Please remember that lighting rod can NOT protect equipment inside facilities or in some box placed ouside.
Earth potntial becomes high, when lightning current goes to the earth. It may be casue of dielectric break down of equipment,
if there are voltage diffence among earth potential and power and signal lines. SPD is one of typical devices to solve such problem.
