This is my personal opinion getting from basic information to protect equipment from lightning surge.
IEC 61643-32 shows SPD protection system of several cases of PV system. Article 6,9 and appendex A show several example drwaings and SPD data. We can have good information about relatively small PV system and Mega PV system from them. Location to be installed and required performance of SPD for PV system are vary depending upon PV conditions, such as distance each equipment and whether PV system has lighting rod or not and number of dowconductors. Values in the tables getting from IEC 61643-32 assuming SPD element is Varister. PV system condition is vary and then please think the data in the table is "reference" for you PV system protection.
PV system placed on roof of buildings are usually under protection of lighting rod with enough separation distance from down conductors of lightning rod. Drawing below shows this case.(IEC 61643-32 Fig.2)
Required performance and location to be installed of SPD will be different from PV system conditons, such as PV system with or without lightning rod and whether separation distance from downconductor is enough or not. PV system condition is vary and then please think the data in the table is "reference" for you PV system protection.Please remember that values in the table show varister SPD and Z postion of Y connection.
Location of SPD:
Installation position : illusteated position at ①、②、③、④.
You may remove SPD location at ④PV alley、②AC side of Inverter depending upon distance of PV alley and Inverter, Inverter and main distribution panel.
Condition to omit SPD:
SPD at ②:Distance is less than 10m between main distribution panel and Inverter and also small enough to neglect induction current from douwn conductor. or It is less than 0.5m of both PE lines to main PE bar from main distribution panel and Inverter, such as both closely placed in a room.
SPD at ④
SPD:Distance is less than 10m between PV alley and Inverter and Up of SPD at ① is less than 0.8 X rated impusle voltage of PV alley.
SPD Spec.:
There are Y, U and delta connection SPD for PV system protection. We show data of Z poition of Y connection SPD. The data in the table is in case of you have not enough inforamtion about the PV system. Additional information can be gotten in article 6, 9 and A.1, A.2 in IEC 61643-32.
(1)SPD class:Install Class 1 at ③ in main distribution panel and Class 2 at other locations ①、②、④.
You can install class 2 SPD at ③ in case of PV system without lightning rod. All SPD should be class 1 if PV system with lightning rod and sepration distance from downcondctors in not enough from down conductor.
(2)Voltage protection level: It is 4.0kV or less for Invertor and PV alley(level B) for DC 600V PV system. It is 6.0kV or less for level A or double layer/enhanced inslution PV alley. Voltage protection level will differnet with DC 1,000V PV system.
Illustrate Mega PV system with 20mx20m mesh earth grounding system with lightning rod. Each equipment have enough separation distance from downconductors. The Mega PV system will be proteced as LPL(Lightning Protection lvel) level 3 (
Max lightning current is 100kA).We made the table that SPD element is varistor and getting from IEC 61643-32. Please remember that PV system condition is vary and then the data in the table is "reference" for you PV system. Values in the table show varister SPD and Z postion of Y connection.The data does not consider lightning strike hit directly on Inverters, the building or the panel for Inverters.Additional information can be gotten in article 6, 9 and A.1, A.2 in IEC 61643-32.
SPD class and performance are described Appendix A in IEC 61643-32.
Location of SPD:
Inverters placed in one place( Central Inverter System):
No need SPD at AC out-put of Invertor if Inverters located in a building with main distribution panel and the distance is less than 10m. SPD for PV alley and inverter at DC line should be placed.
Each Inverter placed near PV alley( Distributid Inverter system):
SPD should be placed in main distribution panel, inverter at near place both DC and AC side and near place of PV alley.
SPD Spec.:
